Critic’s Review

* Update 9/27/23: Saddle West has permanently burned me as a customer. I will never go back, and I advise you not to go there either.

I’m normally a pretty easy-going customer. I have only a couple red lines with restaurants, but Saddle West just crossed one: they refused to accept my credit card unless I showed them my ID! As I’ve written elsewhere, this is stupid and wrong.

What’s even more damning is the fact that I had been a regular customer here for years. The staff clearly knew me, if not by name at least by face. I had never had a problem before, until now. The cashier (who again has seen me many times) for the first time ever demands that I show my ID when I handed over my credit card, and when I politely (but firmly) pushed back, she became rude and indignant. So I paid cash and left, never to return again. It’s a shame.

Original review remains below for historical purposes:

Good food. Cheap. Unreliable service.

That’s the shortest way to describe The Silver Spur. I actually do like eating there… they make a pretty tasty burger (even though the patty used to be bigger… but I digress). Breakfast is solid, with your typical American options. For dinner they have a turkey plate which is pretty satisfying. There is also the buffet — while I’ve not tried it personally, a lot of people seem to come here for it. It looks like a good deal, anyway.

They have real brewed iced tea, which is great except… good luck ever getting it refilled. There are 2 really good servers there, and if you’re lucky and you get one of them, you’ll be well taken care of. If not, you’re S.O.L. There’s one waitress who is perpetually in a bad mood — you’ll know her if you see her — and the others all tend to disappear permanently as soon as they’ve dropped off your food. The busboys (or girls) will never, ever, come around with refills either. I’ve learned to bring my own iced tea with me in the car whenever I go to Saddle West, because there’s an 80% chance I’ll be walking out thirsty at the end of my meal.

The atmosphere is nothing special — tables, chairs, and a few TVs around the walls. The casino has a cool western vibe, definitely a locals casino, but the restaurant is nothing memorable to look at.

Still, I enjoy eating at Saddle West from time to time, as the food is good and it’s cheap. Just keep your expectations low when it comes to service.

My family and I along with a dear friend came for their Christmas Buffet. The food was not good, the prime rib was well done and soaked in a beef broth which dried it out. The turkey was dry and tasteless. There was no sweet potatoes as advertised and the food overall was extremely disappointing. Then we were charged $21.95 per person instead of the advertised $15.95. I was apologetic to my family and guest as the overall experience was terrible. We are regulars to their breakfast buffets which are always very good but we will never come to their holiday buffets again. They ruined our Christmas and embarrassed me.
