Critic’s Review

* Update 7/27/23: We’ve become aware that Symphony’s Restaurant has permanently closed. We’ve heard rumors it will be replaced with a new Italian restaurant under different ownership, but like all rumors in this town, take it with a grain of salt. All we know for sure is, Symphony’s is no longer.

Original review remains below for historical purposes:

It’s a nice restaurant that thinks very highly of itself.

The food is solid, the service is great as far as the waitstaff go, but the hostess is not very friendly and the whole attitude of the place comes off a bit snooty. It made me feel not too welcome right off the bat, hence knocking a star off of the atmosphere rating.

I’ll give you an example. The last time I went here, it was because I had family visiting from out of town and I wanted to take them to a nice dinner. It was a Monday night which meant that unfortunately Stockman’s Steakhouse was closed, so Symphony’s is my backup option. Reservations are really required here (Stockman’s will let me slide in sometimes without a reservation, but not Symphony’s!) so I called and made a reservation for 5:30. Now, shame on me, by the time we got there, parked, got our more elderly family member inside and finally walked up to the hostess stand, it was 5:45. Yes, I was 15 minutes late, I admit that. However a quick glance around the restaurant showed two-thirds of the tables were empty — again, it was a Monday night, so I didn’t think it was any big deal. The hostess, however, seemed pretty bothered by it. When I gave her my name, she spent an uncomfortably long time studying her book, then said “I no-showed you, but we can still take you in”, with her tone sounding as if she was doing us a great favor!

Basically, they’re playing the “oh look we’re so exclusive” game even while more than half their restaurant is empty. I have zero patience for bullshit like this, so even though I held my tongue about it, it predisposed me to not really enjoy that particular visit. I mean, do they want my money or not?!

Thankfully, once we got to our table everything was fine, and the waitress (who we’ve had before, but I don’t know her name) was super nice. At one point I couldn’t help but overhear another table where a guy said he only comes to Symphony’s when Stockman’s is closed. I feel the same way.

In terms of atmosphere, Symphony’s has a much lighter, more feminine vibe compared to Stockman’s. Personally I prefer the darker Stockman’s vibe, but on the other hand if you get to Symphony’s early enough you can enjoy the views of the winery outside all the windows, which is nice. The food is pretty comparable to Stockman’s, although I sometimes feel it’s lacking a certain je ne sais quoi.

Bottom line, Symphony’s is a nice place to go if you can’t get into Stockman’s.
